145 Indian credit cards · every clause read

Everything your card
quietly doesn't pay for*

* the part they print like this

Reward Points shall not be accrued for the following categories of transactions: rent payments, government related transactions, fuel transactions, wallet loads and prepaid instrument loads, EMI conversions, cash advances, balance transfers, education payments made through third party applications, insurance premium payments beyond the capped limit, utility payments beyond the capped limit, and any transaction subsequently reversed, cancelled or disputed. The Bank reserves the right to amend this list at its sole discretion without prior intimation to the Cardmember.

The reward rate goes on the poster; the exclusions go on page thirty-one. We read page thirty-one for every card, and quote the clause behind each answer.

How we know

No one is typing these rules in by hand. That is the reason the answer can cover every card and still be current.

01

Fetch the actual documents

Terms are pulled straight from each issuer's own site — the MITC, the reward programme terms, the product change notices. Links are rediscovered every run, because banks re-upload these under new filenames when they change them.

02

Read every clause

Each clause is checked against 58 spending situations. That is thousands of individual judgements per card, which is only possible because each one costs a fraction of a paisa.

03

Show you the clause

Rates, caps and dates are parsed from the text by ordinary code, never guessed. Every verdict is shown next to the sentence it came from, with a link to the issuer's document.

What we don't know

Everyone else in this category quietly guesses. Here is where we stop.

Merchant codes. Issuers decide what counts as "rent" or "fuel" using MCC codes they do not publish. We can read every clause perfectly and still not know which code your landlord's app bills under.
Not stated means not stated. When no clause settles a question we say so, rather than inferring an answer from the marketing page.
The issuer is the authority. These are quotes from published terms, read by software. Before a large payment, check the document we link to.
